From Athena to Aphrodite

Athena

Yesterday I finished my first 10 mile race. Today I'm uber sore, think I have a stress fracture in my foot, am retaining about 5 pounds of  fluid (leave it to me to GAIN weight after running 10 miles) and am pretty upset with how I look in the pictures from the race.  How fitting is it that a couple weeks ago my close friend G and I decided to run our weight off, this 10 miler as the starting point.

In runner's lingo, Athena is a woman runner over 150 pounds. Ding, ding, ding, that's me! Now, being referred to as a Greek goddess is quite flattering, but Athena was the androgynous goddess. Yikes, after having said that sentence out loud and  looking at my pic, Athena is a pretty dead on description. Ouch! Any who, I want to be Aphrodite. She's the prettier one.

Aphrodite
Our Athena to Aphrodite plan is to
1. not focus on weight loss
2. focus on healthy training for the 1/2 marathon in October
3. Document our progress along the way.

My goals are 2 pound weight loss per week, live a healthy lifestyle of physical fitness, nutrition, self-image, AND 13.1 miles in 2:45:00!

Oh, and still be referred to as a goddess.

Good 4 U Maple & Brown Sugar Oatmeal

Oatmeal is loved by both my daughter and I. Of course my favorite is Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal with a bit of milk. Um, not good, especially after you add that big ole pat of butter. So I concocted a recipe that tastes like the high calorie, high sugar, high fat oatmeal but isn't! (And it's cheaper than those individual packets available in the stores)

Oatmeal
Water
Maple Extract(about 1/4-1/2 teaspoon)
Butter Extract (about 1/4-1/4 teaspoon)
Brown Sugar OR Brown Sugar Splenda
Skim Milk, if you like your oatmeal creamy
Microwave for 2 minutes

How awesome is this? I use the Splenda to keep our sugar intake low but you'd never guess! If you like other flavored oatmeal there are many flavors of extracts available!

Darn I Earned This! (DIET)

A healthometer that comes from a dumpster. Wei...Image via Wikipedia
Yep, this isn't my first post on my battle of the bulge. I guarantee it won't be my last. The difference? Where I am emotionally now is a whole different country than where I've been all my life!

The only thing in my past that I really had "control" over (I hate that word, it's so dictator-like) was my body. I controlled what I put in it, put on it (3 tattoos and counting), who I let near it. From an emotionally healthy person viewpoint you'd look and say "Um, obviously by the size of your rear you had no control". Au contraire. Sadly I sabotaged my own body with my "control". Making my weight go up and down let me know that I in fact was in control of me. Confusing...yes. I'll just stop now.

This past year I've reached some major emotional milestones, each one making me stronger and not worried about the storm around me. I grew up believing that if you put yourself first for anything you are selfish and doomed for an eternity in hell. I now have learned that putting yourself first is not selfish, it's healthy. I have to put my overhead O2 mask on before I can help others sitting next to me.

Nutrisystem-logo.jpgMy weight loss program of choice is NutriSystem. I did it before back in 2006 and was quite successful. I'm looking forward to the journey ahead because gosh Darn I Earned This!

Healthy Diet Pills

Diet Pills. Yesterday I had to buy a new skirt for my Uncle's funeral and the size I had to get made me want to throw up and immediately go to Fat Camp or audition for the lead in Hairspray.

Fat camp and Broadway are not options. I have a toddler to take care of. My family has been eating healthy Mediterranean dishes for about a year now. When we first started there was some weight loss, but then adding tons-o-sweets kinda killed that. Ice cream is my downfall, chocolate is its evil co-conspirator and my home business is boutique bakery goods that taste AWESOME-not good for a fat chic!

So, yesterday I decided to seek a healthier alternative to the standard diet pills. I started taking Watkins Reduce Plus Dietary Supplement. The label claims they help reduce food cravings, supports sugar and fat metabolism, and promotes healthy blood sugar levels. That's for me!

My hubs and I did go out yesterday and buy running shoes too (he had to buy new pants since none of his fit him either). So in conjunction with my new Watkins Reduce Plus supplements, choosing healthier food alternatives while not snacking on sugar, and adding exercise I'll be on a good path to a healthy weight! And setting a better example for my already-in-love-with-chocolate-and-ice cream toddler!
Wish me luck!

Another Frugal Feast!

Once again, another frugal dinner success! For $6.00 we have 2 nights of dinner for the 3 of us! That's right, a $3.00 dinner tonight. For less than 1 value meal at that fast food joint with the clown a pseudo healthy meal was created.  Here it is: (And yes, my hubs created a delish dipping sauce for our falafel!)

Fried Falafel with fresh made Naan and a Parsley Lemon dipping sauce, served with a scoop of sour cream, fresh radishes, and red bell pepper strips.

The recipes are posted here, at Becoming Italian if you are wanting to try it for yourself!
(Except for the falafel-I buy the box mix you just have to add water to!)

Swordfish Delish Dish!

The Mom Standard is not turning into a food blog, but since I make the rules I'll allow awesome recipes that are easy to prepare, delicious, and for the most part-inexpensive!

Here's another delish dish taken from

Istanbul's Pandeli Restaurant Fish Packets
1.5 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 1/4 pound piece of swordfish or boneless fillet of sea bass, snapper, or haddock (I used swordfish steaks)
2 or 3 small potatoes, peeled, or 1 medium potato peeled and cut into 3 or 4 pieces
2 or 3 pearl onions. (I used a regular white onion 'cause that was all we had in the house)
1 thick slice of tomato, diced (I used a small can of diced tomatoes)
3 or 4 strips of green bell pepper
salt and pepper to taste
pinch of sweet paprika mixed with a pinch of cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
-Makes 1 serving

Pull out a square of heavy-duty foil or parchment large enough to make a loose packet around the fish and the vegetables.. Smear half of the olive oil on the foil and set the fish in the middle.

Parboil the potatoes for about 4 or 5 minutes

Pile the parboiled potatoes, onions, tomato, and pepper strips on top of the fish.  Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and the paprika/cayenne mixture. Drizzle the remaining oil and the lemon juice over the top.

Bake in a 425 degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until the fish and vegetables are cooked all the way through. (I cooked them for 40 minutes).

The FruGAL in me wants to let you know that the swordfish steaks were from Trader Joe's and cost about $7.00. The rest of the ingredients we had in our kitchen. So for frugal meal planning, this one fed 3 for about $8.00! We would pay closer to $45 or $50 at the local Mediterranean restaurant we frequent!

My daughter insisted I photograph her plate of food as well. Yep, she ate this dish and liked it!

P.S. If you're starting to like my cooking too, you can check out other recipes I've made on my blog Becoming Italian!

Holy Hips!

Good G_d! Have I let myself go, my hips are going to have their own zip code pretty soon!

Mumu dresses are my m.o. this summer--not flattering AT ALL! Baby weight? Yep, I still have it (2 years later) and then a few extra for safe measure.

I'm going to add to my not-quite-full-enough-plate that dreaded 4 letter word...I can't even type it! Maybe I should start a blog called "Frugal & Fasting: Saving money by not eating!" :-)

Wish me luck and send some willpower my way please!
