Parenting advice requested, must have dysfunctional experience.

If a family member of yours was starting to say negative things about you to your 3.5 year old child, and you know this will only progress over time, what would you do? (So negative in the eyes of that child that she was not comfortable coming directly to me about it!)

Wait! It's not that simple. I'm sure someone will say, "Just sit down with that FM and discuss what is appropriate to say to your daughter."

Let me throw into the pot Borderline Personality Disorder, and I'm ALWAYS the bad person (if you are familiar with this disorder, you'll fully understand).

Now, suggestions as to how I approach this?

  1. my family from top to bottom is functionally dysfunctional.

We have this issues with two members of my family. we limit the contact between them and our 2 youngest children - aged 7 & 8. My wife and I have spoken, fought with, and written out communication with these members and they just don;'t get their ignorance and arrogance.

    1. Thanks Lance for your kindred-ship in this FUN area! Seems the only option I have is to limit contact...that's the best approach to avoid ME being labeled the crazy person by my daughter in the future! :-)

  2. At age 3.5 hopefully, the child may soon forget what they've heard. I think it's best to limit their contact from here on out. With more repetitions from FM, it's guaranteed to create a lasting impression on the child. Beats me why FMs would want to do that, no really *sigh*!

    1. Thanks Clarity. Yes, limiting contact is really our only option at this point. Sadly, my daughter though she looks nothing like me has my obnoxious and sometimes hindering elephant-like memory. I pray she brushes off the negatives and just continues to enjoy being a child!
